Explore Karpaz

The Karpaz Peninsula (Turkish: karpaz yarımadası), also known historically as Karpasia or the Karpas Peninsula, is the northeastern tip of Cyprus – a long finger of land often nicknamed the “Panhandle.” This area remains one of the Mediterranean’s last truly unspoiled havens, characterized by rugged coastline, wild nature, and only a sprinkling of small villages. Often, the region is simply referred to as karpaz cyprus (Karpaz, Cyprus) to highlight its location.

Historic & Cultural Highlights

This peninsula offers a step back in time to a simpler Cyprus: fishermen mending nets in tiny harbors, farmers using horse-drawn carts in their fields, and sea turtles nesting on untouched shores. It’s a natural wonder that draws intrepid travelers seeking authenticity and tranquility.

From top sights and unique things to do, to practical tips, karpaz hotels for every budget, and the best local restaurants and bars. Grab a map and get ready to explore Karpaz’s hidden gems!

Rustic Beach Bungalows & Guesthouses: For those who want a back-to-nature experience, there are a few family-run guesthouses and bungalow camps near the beach areas. Around Golden Beach and Dipkarpaz, for example, you’ll find simple wooden bungalows and eco-friendly huts that offer basic comfort just steps from the sand.

Boutique Hotels & Marina Resort: If you prefer more comfort, you won’t be disappointed either. The standout choice in the area is undoubtedly the Karpaz Gate Marina Hotel, a boutique 5-star hotel at the yacht marina.

Camping: Officially, there are no fully serviced campgrounds in the remote peninsula, and wild camping is restricted in many parts due to environmental protection (especially near turtle beaches).

Karpaz has limited accommodation, and during peak months (July-August, or holiday weekends) the few spots can fill up quickly with both foreign tourists and locals on getaway. Also, remember that electricity and hot water might not be 24/7 in more remote lodgings, and air-conditioning may be a luxury only found at the marina or big resorts.

Hotels in Karpaz

Being a sparsely populated region, Karpaz doesn’t have big resort towns – but that’s part of its charm. Accommodation options in the peninsula range from very rustic to surprisingly luxurious, giving you a chance to choose how “off-grid” you want your stay to be.

Resturuants & Bars in Karpaz

When it comes to food, Karpaz offers simple, wholesome Cypriot cuisine that often tastes even better after a day in the sea air. You won’t find nightclubs or fancy haute cuisine here, but you will find authentic local eateries and the occasional beach bar where you can kick back with a cold drink.

Karpaz is not a party destination, and after dark, things are very low-key. Most “bars” in the area are simply attached to restaurants or are beach bars that close when the sun goes down. In Dipkarpaz, there are a couple of small café-bars where locals play cards or backgammon in the evenings over a glass of raki or a beer

Karpaz Top Sights

One of the joys of the Karpaz Peninsula is discovering its standout attractions, which often feel like well-kept secrets. Here are some must-see sights that define the Karpaz experience.

Golden Beach (Nangomi Bay) – Often hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Golden Beach is a 3-4 km stretch of soft, golden sand lapped by crystal-clear waters. Also known as Altınkum.

Wild Donkeys of Karpaz – The Karpaz Peninsula is famous for its herd of approximately 500 free-roaming wild donkeys. These endearing animals, descended from farm donkeys abandoned decades ago, have become a symbol of the region.

Apostolos Andreas Monastery – Near the farthest tip of the peninsula stands this historic monastery, dedicated to St. Andrew (Apostolos Andreas in Greek). It’s a revered pilgrimage site for both Orthodox Greek & Turkish Cypriots.

Karpaz Gate Marina – In contrast to Karpaz’s wild nature, Karpaz Gate Marina is a touch of modern luxury on the north coast of the peninsula.

Karpaz Map

The Karpaz Peninsula is about a 1.5-2 hour drive from the main cities of North Cyprus (roughly 120 km from Nicosia or Kyrenia, and around 70-80 km from Famagusta to Dipkarpaz). A car is absolutely essential for exploring Karpaz.

Best Time to Visit: Karpaz can be visited year-round, but each season offers a different vibe. Summer (June-August) brings hot weather – great for beach time and swimming, but note it can get very hot (35°C+), and there’s little shade on those beaches.
